Take Action If You Smell Gas

Even though propane is considered to be safer than many other types of fuel, you should still understand how to handle a potentially dangerous situation. Keep reading to learn how to take action if you smell gas.

Put Out Flames and Turn Off the Gas Valve

The first step you should take when you smell gas is to put out any open flames in the area. Extinguish anything that is smoking, and make sure the gas shutoff valve on your propane tank is closed; leave it closed even if the smell dissipates. Leaving flames open while gas is leaking can result in an extremely dangerous or even deadly fire.

Evacuate the Area and Call for Help

Once all fires and smoking materials have been put out and your propane tank’s gas shutoff valve has been shut, get away from the smell as soon as you can. Do not touch any appliances, thermostats, or electrical switches as you evacuate. After removing yourself from the situation, use your cell phone to call your propane company and emergency services. It is important that you wait until you are out of danger before you make these calls.

Wait for Confirmation

Even if the problem seems to have gone away, you always want to be sure before you find yourself in even more trouble. Don’t open your propane valve again until you are told it is safe to do so, and make sure you have a qualified professional repair any leaks.
