Look at the 100-Year History of Propane

Propane plays a central role in many of today’s homes and business. When you schedule propane delivery for your property, you will enjoy the properties of this safe, clean-burning fuel. However, you may be surprised to learn that propane was only discovered as a fuel source as recently as a century ago. Let’s take a look back at some of the highlights in the 100-year history of propane.

Discovery of Propane

The initial discovery of propane can be traced back to 1910, when a driver approached a local chemist complaining of a unique problem. The driver noted that the gasoline that he had recently purchased seemed to nearly vanish into thin air. The chemist, Dr. Walter Snelling, tested the fuel and discovered that gasoline could be evaporated into its gaseous components, which he named propane.

Popularization of Propane

Within a few years of its initial discovery, propane became a common fixture in many households. Home chefs relied on this new fuel source to power propane gas stoves. Propane was also used to power torches, heat homes, and provide a variety of other services. Within a decade, more than one million gallons of propane had been sold in America alone.

Regulation of Propane

As propane’s popularity soared in the United States, the U.S. government recognized the need to regulate this new fuel source. In 1932, the Compressed Gas Association and National Fire Protection Association joined forces to create a set of safety standards for all users of propane. These standards, which are still in use, helped to set the bar for safe propane use in the United States.
